Man, 33, shot dead in St Ann's

WORSHIPPERS attending Sunday morning mass were interrupted by a short hail of gunshots nearby when a 33-year-old man was shot and killed near his home in St Ann’s on the morning of July 28.

Police identified the victim as Nickel Morris.

Morris was ambushed by at least two gunmen in a silver wagon when he returned home after buying breakfast at around 7.45 am.

The shooting happened at the bottom of Sydenham Avenue – a short distance from the Prime Minister’s residence and two churches.

Publicly released surveillance video showed a car parked on the main road, apparently waiting for Morris to return.

Seconds after Morris got out of  his black Almera, the gunmen pulled aside and shot him multiple times before driving off.

Witnesses were seen running and vehicles behind the car carrying the suspects drove onto a side street to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

Morris’s body  had already been removed when Newsday visited close to midday. His car, however, remained parked and some residents were overheard talking about the shooting, none of whom were willing to speak to the media.

A relative of Morris’s covered his body to prevent people from sharing graphic images.

A shopkeeper told Newsday he understands the victim was targeted in the past but avoided speculating about a motive.

Earlier in July, Che Mendez, an employee of Massy Distribution, was killed and a co-worker wounded in a robbery in Fondes Amandes while delivering cigarettes to a shop.
