Calypso Girls thumped 69-28 by S. Africa at Netball World Cup

Despite a good first quarter showing, the Calypso Girls were defeated 69-28 by South Africa in their opening Netball World Cup Pool G match at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa on Monday.

In the opening segment, TT showed fight although trailing by six points (18-12) heading into the second period. There, however, they were heavily outscored 15 to three, and entered half-time with much work to do at 33-15.

But South Africa’s onslaught continued as they improved in the third quarter by scoring 18 more compared to TT’s six. The Calypso Girls scored six more in the final period but it was no match for another 18-point quarter from the South Africans.

Afeisha Noel (11) and Joelisa Cooper (ten) continued to lead all scorers for TT while Tianna Dillon scored six and Jameela McCarthy, one.

On Wednesday, TT face regional rivals Jamaica in their second Pool G match. Also in this group is defending champions New Zealand, Uganda and Wales.
