THE EDITOR: As a small-island developing state in the global south, emphasis must be placed on leadership, democracy and development. In the midst of the global pandemic, we have myopic and petty individuals in the United National Congress who have no understanding of what the role of the Opposition is in both democracy and development.

Had we in the People's National Movement at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation (SGRC) taken the approach of Kamla Persad-Bissessar in not attending our meetings and seeking the public interest, there would have been no one to keep the UNC-controlled council accountable for their actions. It was the PNM that pointed out that the rescission of employment of the 16 employees at the SGRC was illegal and ultra vires to the Municipal Corporation Act.

It is a sad day when a former prime minister and current Opposition Leader can host a media conference attempting to play smart with foolishness to the demise of our country's growth, stability and development.

As the leader of government business in the House of Representatives, Camille Robinson-Regis reiterated once again that the Opposition adopts the attitude that if it is not in power our country can go to hell in a hand basket.

This cannot be the attitude of those who have been and aspire to be in government again.

The Parliament is where the interests of the people are sought, not through pappyshows. I call on the Opposition Leader to take her role seriously and seek the people of TT’s interest. We as a country cannot develop without a sober opposition debating and representing the interests of the people who have voted for its MPs. This is not about party, this is about country. Do better!
