Hopefully, Rowley will heed plea by Rambachan

THE EDITOR: Former MP Dr Surujrattan Rambachan must be commended for having the courage to take the political bull by the horns in order to send a dire warning to TT's politicians and parliamentarians who, it seems, can rise no higher than constantly attacking each other with a blind and everlasting political rage. Political warfare never stops even while the society itself is collapsing and the horde of criminals keeps on growing bigger and bigger.

There is a difference between a mere politician who worships at the altar of victory in elections and a statesman who seeks to steer society towards social health, security, peace and happiness.

Only those whose hearts are sick can stomach the nasty racial divide that is the bitter fruit of TT's tribal political rivalry.

Yes indeed, we need to search for a new political model which can heal the wounds with which we have been inflicted since the bitter electoral/racial divide with which we have lived since September 1956.

There was wonderful opportunity when Dr Eric Williams passed on and the PNM had the opportunity of a lifetime for a new beginning. Had the leaders of the party the courage to seize the bull by the horns and choose Kamaluddin Mohammed to succeed Williams, Mohammed could have done more to heal those wounds than any of his peers, or any other politician since that time.

Now that Dr Rowley has been given another mandate to govern, even though it was quite slim, one can only hope that he would heed Rambachan's wise and courageous plea and rise to the statesmanship that the country needs. If he does, he will be remembered, and if not, we will have to keep on waiting.
