$5m road boost for Point Fortin tourism
Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan commissioned the $5 million Richardson Road Extension in Point Fortin today. The road, which took six months to complete, starts from Point Fortin Main Road and ends at Clifton Beach resort.
Point Fortin Mayor Abdon Mason said the road would now bring his tourism plan to life. “The Clifton Hill Beach resort was upgraded and it is now a major hub for activities throughout the year,” he said.
He said from as early as 8 am people were already crowding Clifton Hill Beach. “We see a lot of people making their final outing here before the new school term is opened,” he said. He said the road, a segment of the Point Fortin Highway project, would boost tourism in the borough.
Point Fortin MP Edmund Dillon said the old road was once a runway for small aircraft in the early days for oil company Shell's operations in south Trinidad. As boy he would run down from Guapo Village to see the planes touch down, he recalled.
"Today this access road will bring relief to the people of Point Fortin, as the main road serves the business communities and taxi drivers,” Dillon said. The road would allow the public to get to Point Fortin more easily, especially during borough day celebrations.
Sinanan congratulated Coosals Construction Co Ltd for completing the road on time and within budget. “This access road will be pillar for Point Fortin to build their tourism trust. It also expand the borough of Point Fortin,” Sinanan said.
He noted the contract for the final phase of the highway has been awarded would be completed. “I know people from the city of San Fernando and districts visit the beach often and I know this road will be utilised,” he said.
