Relatives of Ryan Mason, the 34-year-old man who was killed by gunmen at the Port of Spain lighthouse yesterday morning, say they remain baffled as to the motive behind his murder.

While police said they knew Mason very well, his relatives claimed the father of four who owned a restaurant, had turned over a new leaf more than a decade ago.

According to police, at about 1.30 am, Mason was driving his BMW sedan west along Wrightson Road and on nearing the lighthouse another car pulled alongside him and the occupants shot at him. Mason was hit several times and crashed his car into the lighthouse. He died at the scene.

Relatives described him as a "saltfish" who was loved by all in his home area of Abbe Poujade Street in Carenage. They admitted that in his teenage years he had run-ins with the law, but had changed his life more than fifteen years ago.

Mason opened a restaurant in Carenage named 'One Love Restaurant'. Relatives from abroad are now making arrangements to come into the country to pay their final respects. No arrest has been made. An autopsy will be done today at the Forensic Science Centre.
