NINE people and organisations yesterday received a total of $245,000 in donations from the ANSA McAL Foundation, for a range of activities from academic research to film archiving.

The recipients included the St Francois Girls’ alumnae association, which collects funds to assist the school. The association’s representative, Tammy Cato, said the funds would be used to help refurbish science labs.

The TT Film Festival’s founder Dr Bruce Paddington collected a grant to help create a Caribbean film database, and Gloria Mootoo, a PhD candidate from UWI, will use her grant for research into organ donation in TT.

Children’s special education initiatives were also given funding. Sr Margarita Chan of the Lady Hochoy Home, and Giselle Adams of the Life Centre – which provides education for learning-disabled children – received grants, as did Robin Edwards of Front Porch, which provides educational and occupational psychotherapy services to families in need.

Among the religious organisations benefiting from the donation were the RC Archbishop’s Appeal and the ASJA Girls’ College.

The ANSA McAL Foundation is a charitable institution, fully funded by the ANSA McAL Group, and is chaired by A Norman Sabga, chairman and chief executive of the ANSA McAL Group.
