Moruga pipeline repairs to finish today

BY 6 pm today, pipeline repairs at Moruga Road in Indian Walk, are expected to be completed according to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

Since Tuesday night when the part of the road was destroyed, it has been impassable. Residents blamed WASA saying recurring leaks from its underground infrastructure is the main reason for the rapid land movement.

WASA, in a media release, advises customers of Moruga and environs that the disruption of their pipe-borne water supply is due to broken 12-inch and 16-inch mains near Jaibo’s Recreation Club.

The leaks happened near the construction of a retaining wall being undertaken by the Works and Transport Ministry as part of its Moruga Road rehabilitation project launched in October 2017.

“The authority and the ministry are collaborating towards having the roadway reconstructed and the pipelines reinstated. Given the extent of the required works by both the Ministry and the WASA, the pipeline repairs are expected to be completed by 6 pm on Friday.”

WASA’s corporate communications department says it may take up to 24 hours for the supply to normalise to some affected areas.

For further information or assistance, customers can contact WASA’s customer call centre toll-free at 800-4420/4426.

“The authority apologises for the inconvenience and thanks customers for their patience and understanding.”

Last month, four residents, including a grandmother and her one-month-old granddaughter, moved out of their badly damaged house as it was deemed unfit to live in.

Another resident, Petal Dookie, said: “Vehicles still cannot pass. Right now, we are seeing the contractors on site doing work.”

The ministry said the “temporary traffic disruption” is necessary to facilitate repairs to the WASA mains and related road reinstatement works.

In a media release yesterday, the ministry called on drivers and commuters to use alternative routes. The ministry asks drivers to proceed with caution and observe all signs.

“Please comply with instructions from police officers on site to facilitate a safe and orderly flow of traffic. Motorists should drive at a reduced speed,” the release said.
