Sandals did not need Tobago

THE EDITOR: Sandals did not need Tobago. Tobago needed Sandals. Sandals would have been a game changer for Tobago in the most fundamental meaning of the term. Bahamas, Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada did not ask Sandals what Sandals could do for them. They asked Sandals, what can we do for you.

Of course, Jamaicans already knew what Sandals could do for them.

Eric Williams defined Tobago’s problem decades ago when he said that Tobago was doubly colonized, first by Great Britain, and then by Trinidad.

He himself was circumscribed by the limitations of his own neo-colonial mindset and so, while able to define the problem intellectually, he could do nothing about it politically.

Today we are still saddled with Lloyd Best’s Napoleoncitos, convinced that they are breathing hellfire while in reality spitting in the wind.
