No screen doors for Point hospital kitchen
IT has been a week since staff at the Point Fortin hospital began revealing some of the horrors they face daily, including infestations of snakes, flies and pigeons on wards and in the hospital’s kitchen.
While the Zoological Society sprang into action to spray for snakes last Thursday, to date no screen doors have been installed in the hospital kitchen, where staff say a corbeau once flew in and had to be chased out.
Newsday understands the Unified Health Sector Workers’ Union wrote to the hospital’s facility manager on Sunday evening, asking for screen doors. Up until noon yesterday, there had been no response to the e-mail.
Meals are prepared in the kitchen for approximately 80 patients a day, as lunches are provided for patients of the nearby Extended Care Centre.
The union also wrote to Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh but staff at his office said he was not in the country over the weekend.
Newsday tried reaching the CEO of the South West Regional Health Authority but multiple calls were unanswered yesterday.
