PC Roxanne James, who was shot and wounded at the San Juan police station last September, said she could not have asked for more than to be home for the New Year. James was discharged from hospital on December 31 at around 6 pm.

Speaking yesterday, she said it was a happy moment for herself and her family, as they were together for the beginning of 2018. “I am going okay,” she added, even though she also said, “I am still on medication, and I am not mobile at the moment. I will be seeing a physiotherapist some time soon. While I am still recovering from a gunshot wound to my stomach, I recently suffered a stroke and I cannot move the left side of my body: the left arm and the left leg are not moving.

She said until she completed her physiotherapy, “I am in the wheelchair for a while. I am not mobile.” But, she went on, “To be out of the hospital, I am very happy. There was nothing more I wanted for the New Year (than) to come out of the hospital, because I have a small child – two years old – and my other children were also looking forward for me to be home.”

Asked if she will be returning to the police, James said before any decision can be made, she must go through a process. “You can either retire or go through the police medical board and have them declare you as medically unfit. You cannot just say you are not returning to the service, it does not work like that,” she said. The next step in her life is to try to get healthy and to live as full a life as she can. Harry James, her husband, said he felt “excellent” and “great” to have his wife home for the New Year. “I gave God all the thanks and praise. God alone knows how much we were prayer for her to be out of the hospital. God deserves all the glory and praise. God took control and had her home with us for the New Year,” he said.
