Police association to provide counselling for shot officer

SHOT: WPC Roxanne Sealy
SHOT: WPC Roxanne Sealy

PC Roxanne Sealy’s decision not to return to the police after she recuperates is a personal decision, said president of the Police Social and Welfare Association Insp Michael Seales.

Sealy was accidentally shot in September at the San Juan police station. In an interview yesterday, Seales said the association will have to provide a lot of support and counselling for Sealy and her family.

“Should I have been in her shoes, that would have been the immediate response from me in terms of how I feel about the police service on the whole. I think there is a need for a lot of counselling to be done and a fairer assessment of her statement can be made on whether she is still going to hold true to that same position.”

Seales said the most important fact right now is to ensure Sealy has all the support she needs for a full recovery, and the association is there to support her whether she wants to return to the police or not.

“The main issue right now is to support her continuously and to make sure she has that sustained support in trying to put her life back together. The association is ready to help with anything, and as president I have given my firm commitment to her husband, Mr Harry, that anything he needs, I am going to help in any way that I possibly can,” Seales said.
