UPDATED:

The Nagoo family who were forced to live in their car after being evicted last month, now hope to give back to all the good Samaritans who assisted them.

“We thank Mr Khan and countless people who assisted us. If we could find a way to do something to thank them, we do not mind. Labour work maybe or anything. We find it necessary in our hearts to give back to the people who helped us sincerely from their hearts,” said Dave Nagoo, 38.

Nagoo made the comments yesterday on behalf of his wife Indira, 27, and their three daughters who are 10, eight and seven. The couple are gardeners and fish vendors.

As of Friday, work began for the construction of a two-bedroom wooden house on the property of a relative at South Oropouche. The driving force behind the construction is Princes Town resident Riaz Khan, 37, having been prompted to do help by his 10-year-old twin daughters Mariah and Mayah. Having read the plight of the Nagoo family in last week’s Sunday Newsday, the Khan family were moved to tears and decided to assist.

The Nagoos had been sleeping in their old Nissan March car at different locations since October 9 when they were evicted from their home due to a property dispute. That same day, the house was also demolished. To make matters worse, Nagoo was served with a restraining order from the Siparia Magistrates Court which debars him from going within 100 metres of the property where his family lived.

Yesterday workmen were busy erecting the wooden structure and Nagoo repeatedly expressed gratitude to all those who assisted the family.

“The same day the story came out, people started to assist. They are really trying for us to get our lives back. Even those who gave us advice, they assisted. We thank all of them for what they did for us,” Nagoo said.

Nagoo called for justice saying the demolition itself caused psychological trauma to his family. Nagoo claimed he had been living on the property from birth, likewise his children.

“I was not served with any documents. We could not remove anything from the house. We lost everything. All my children’s books and uniform were destroyed. But people helped us and so now they are going back to school. They held me down and broke down my home. We want justice,” Nagoo added.

His wife yesterday complained that the family’s garden is now a “thieving field” and because of the three-year restraining order, they have no access to their crops.

“We cannot go back to location, so we cannot tend to our crops. We have to start all over again. We have dasheen, figs, cucumber, pines and many other crops. We were also minding chickens and ducks and now people are thieving out everything,” Indira said.

The mother of two insisted the family work hard for what they want. They are now staying at the home of a relative until the house is built.

“We don’t want this to happen to any other person. When people work hard to get their things and other people just take it away, it is not nice. The moment our story came out, help came,” Indira said.

Contacted yesterday, Khan estimated that depending on the weather conditions, construction can be completed in the next two weeks.
