Grandson in court for murder

A 26-year-old musician from Freeport appeared in the Couva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the murder of his grandfather whose body was found stuffed in a barrel at his home after a ransom of $100,000 was demanded.

Michael Mings of Calcutta Road, Freeport appeared before senior magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran who read the charge to him that between October 4 and October 6, he murdered 88-year-old Irving Mings also of Calcutta Road, Freeport.

He was a pensioner and had been reported missing days before. An autopsy revealed he died from asphyxiation.

Grandson Michael was charged by PC Vanessa Callender-Sinclair after advice was sought from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard on Thursday last.

He has been ordered remanded into custody to reappear on November 12.
