Search continues for dumped babies’ mother

Central Division officers yesterday scoured several villages near the Forres Park landfill in search of information that could help them identify the mother of the stillborn fraternal twins found in a cardboard box at the dump on Wednesday.

While this was being done, other officers went to health centres and hospitals between Central and San Fernando to check medical records that might aid their investigation. Up until late yesterday, no useful information had been found.

Yesterday, head of the Central Division, Senior Superintendent Kenny Mc Intyre, said police would be relentless in their efforts to find the woman who gave birth to the babies.

He said while it was important for the mother to be found to assist with a police investigation, it was also necessary for her to be given counselling.

Yesterday, police went to Pranz Gardens, Spring Vale, Macaulay, St Margarets and Union villages as well as Forres Park and environs in search of anyone who might have been close to full-term pregnancy.

None of the persons interviewed were able to assist the officers.

Police believe the person or people who dumped the babies might have been someone living in the vicinity of the dump.

Checks yesterday also revealed that there were no surveillance cameras at the Forres Park dump and that none of the drivers of sanitation trucks were able to say where the babies might have come from.

Police investigators said that anyone with information could call the police E999 command centre anonymously and the information would be relayed to officers of the Central Division.

On Wednesday, SWMCOL supervisor Sean Blackburn observed corbeaux pecking at the feet of what appeared to be a newborn baby. Blackburn then discovered the bodies of two babies. He wrapped the bodies in a piece of red cloth and contacted police.

The bodies were viewed by district medical officer Dr Vekash Ramlogan who ordered their removal to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy revealed the babies were twins, a boy and a girl, and were born dead.
