Artists Jacy O’Brien and Rajesh Arjoon will offer a look at culture, heritage, and personal expression through their work at Horizons Art Gallery.

Jacy O'Brien -

Arjoon, aka Joon, is a self-taught artist and musician whose work plays with light, movement, and mood. His career began in the commercial sign industry, where he mastered airbrushing, screen printing, and graphic design before shifting to fine art in 2016. Since then, he has participated in several exhibitions, earning recognition for his expressive use of colour and composition, a media release said.

Arjoon’s work ranges from landscapes to abstracts and portraits, each piece carefully designed to evoke emotion. His ability to balance bold colours with intricate details has made his art sought-after by collectors in the Caribbean, the US and the UK. Currently a member of the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago and a regular exhibitor at Horizons, Arjoon continues to explore and refine his craft, the release said.

O’Brien, a 21-year-old artist from Paramin, has always used art to express himself. From childhood, he found solace in painting, a habit that started as a way to pass time during punishments from his grandparents.

With a strong artistic lineage, his grandfather was a "master sculptor" and his cousin Kenderson Noray is a professional artist. O’Brien’s passion for art developed naturally.

His work is a tribute to the elders of his community. He focuses on painting senior citizens from Paramin, capturing their expressions and daily lives.

“I’ve always had a connection with the elderly,” O’Brien said in the release. “Growing up with my grandparents, I valued their wisdom and stories, and that reflects in my work.”

His piece 7AM exemplifies this theme, depicting an elderly market vendor in the early morning light. Through careful attention to detail, O’Brien highlights the character and history embedded in every face he paints, aiming to preserve and appreciate what often goes unnoticed.

Together, Arjoon and O’Brien bring two distinct yet complementary styles to this exhibition. O’Brien’s focus on realism and storytelling offers a heartfelt perspective on community and tradition, while Arjoon’s expressive approach creates visually engaging and thought-provoking pieces.
