Another shooting in the capital yesterday left one man dead and another injured at the popular Breakfast Shed at the waterfront on Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

On Monday, at around 5.20 am, two gunmen opened fire at the shed, shooting 61-year-old Curtis Extavour, an independent labourer from East Dry River, who was carrying out an odd job. He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital. Up until press time, his condition was unknown.

Omar Hunte, a 39-year-old man from Dibe Road, Long Circular, St James, was eating a bake and shark when he was shot and killed. As the gunmen started shooting, Breakfast Shed employees and passersby ran for safety.

It is unknown how the gunmen arrived at or left the scene. There are no security cameras in the shed.

When Newsday went to the area around 9.30 am, it was cordoned off and police were inspecting the Trinjam restaurant, as its gate bore several bullet holes.

Owing to the collection of evidence, the Calypso Sprinter water taxi could not use its regular entry port and had to dock elsewhere. As passengers exited the ferry metres away from the scene, they seemed surprised at the police presence.

Former deputy political leader of the National Transformation Alliance, Nikoli Edwards after departing the Calypso Sprinter told Newsday that he was concerned with the state of crime and that citizens’ lives are in danger daily.

“This taking place at the Breakfast Shed makes me feel more unsafe given the high murder rate we are experiencing currently and the trend that we have been witnessing each month.

“The only thing I could really do is just be more vigilant, but the reality is, you can be as vigilant as you want, there can always be a stray bullet, or you can always be at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Edwards says there was not much more the public can do to ensure their safety and security.

“It is the responsibility of those who are to maintain law and order in this country. They obviously don’t have a handle on crime.

“No one has a handle on crime right now. The criminals have a handle on crime.”

He believes a lot more was needed to steer people away from crime, saying there was a need for proper systems that hold people accountable and ensure justice was served.

On Sunday, Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds, acting Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher and Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel, attended a police interfaith service held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Port of Spain.
