Lessons from Salzburg

THE EDITOR: I write this letter with a heart full of inspiration and reflection following a train journey from Munich, Germany, to Salzburg, Austria in 2019.

As the beautiful countryside sped by and the majestic Alps stood tall, I couldn't help but ponder the lessons that lay before me.

The journey presented a glimpse into the result of centuries of art, history, and culture, accompanied by the efficiency of a well-organised transportation system.

As I admired the beauty of the Alps from my train window, I was humbled by its sheer majesty. It seemed to whisper, "Look how small and infinite you are." And as we crossed into Austria, our fellow passengers welcomed us in song, reminding us that indeed, the hills are alive with the sound of music.

The journey that day prompted me to reflect on the significance of this day, July 27, in the history of Trinidad and Tobago.

It was on this day, 33 years ago, when the rule of law and order was suspended by those who felt governance had failed them. While they sought change, their actions were misguided, and history judged them accordingly.

Interestingly enough, the same rule of law they suspended, was the same rule of law that saved them from the hangman.

Today, over three decades later, it is crucial to ask ourselves as a society if we have truly changed. Have our values evolved? Have we become more caring and disciplined? Do we respect the personal space of those around us? Have we embraced the responsibilities that come with ownership?

Having spent several weeks in Germany that year, I witnessed flashes of what we can achieve as a people and a nation. While it may seem improbable, it was not impossible. The path to progress lies in acknowledging our flaws and addressing them collectively.

Our political landscape has been marred by a focus on personalities rather than outcomes.

We must return to the essence of the social contract, as articulated by Rousseau, centuries ago. Our responsibility as citizens is to hold our government accountable, transcending the allure of personalities that often distract us.

As leaders, we must inspire and offer hope for a better tomorrow. We need principled action, trust, and discipline to guide us. To every young citizen of TT, I implore you to demand better. Respect the value of your tax dollars and hold every public servant accountable.

Let good governance be the sculptor of our future. Though the truth may sometimes carry a heavy burden, it pales in comparison to the cost of lies. The rule of law, however flawed it may be at times, stands as a crucial divider between civilization and chaos.

I acknowledge that my opinion is subjective, shaped by my unique lens of the world. Everyone's perspective may differ and that is acceptable.

In conclusion, let us learn from the lessons of Salzburg and strive for a Trinidad and Tobago that embraces good governance, accountability, and responsibility. Together, we can shape a brighter future for our beloved nation.
