THE EDITOR: Congratulations to the Rio Claro Heritage and Preservation Organisation on the successful installation of a historical marker on June 24. On behalf of the council and staff of the National Trust of TT I wish, through the medium of the press, to extend hearty congratulations to the organising committee of the organisation for its persistence to bring recognition to the sacrifice of citizens of the Rio Claro area in their struggle for workers’ rights in 1937.

This event marked in a tangible way the little-known story of the impact of the labour struggles at that time in Rio Claro, where five people lost their lives, several were injured and many arrested and charged, including one woman. Two of the relatives of those who were killed attended the ceremony and laid wreaths at the marker.

The selection of the speakers at the event showed support from the regional corporation, the MP, the labour movement, the National Trust and the donors. Prof Dr Brinsley Samaroo shared his knowledge generously, in keeping with the way his life had come to symbolise, and gave an excellent feature address, particularly so as he was a son of Rio Claro.

Certainly, each member of the audience learnt something more about the event in 1937 and understood why it was so important to commemorate the sacrifices and commitment of those who have contributed to workers’ rights and welfare in this country. We at the National Trust owe a debt of gratitude to Samaroo and the other eminent historians who continue to do research and are so willing to help us understand our story.

The plaque is lovely and I am sure it will serve as a template for other communities that wish to celebrate their own history. It is elegant and yet robust and serves to enhance this heritage location. Rio Claro now has a marker around which to centre its continuing and ever-expanding heritage observations each year.

The National Trust is pleased to be associated with this organisation and all other community-based groups that wish to deepen understanding and appreciation of our rich heritage.
