Wasting $10m on remedial classes

THE EDITOR: It is unlikely, if not impossible, that the learning loss caused by two years of school closure can be fixed by a few weeks of remedial classes.

This means the Ministry of Education, with the complicity of the teachers’ union and the National Parent-Teacher Association, will be wasting $10 million of taxpayers’ money.

Were these authorities serious about helping the children who scored below 50 per cent in the SEA exam, this money would instead be used to ensure that all primary school teachers and all secondary English and maths teachers get instructions in remedial teaching over the August vacation.

The ministry should also start revamping the curriculum to cater for these underperforming students.
