THE EDITOR: The latest in a long line of faux pas by Kamla Persad-Bissessar has once again underscored why the UNC will continue to remain in opposition as long as Kamla continues to remain its leader.

In response to the Leader of Government Business Camille Robinson-Regis calling Kamla’s name in a particular issue, the Opposition Leader chose to respond by indicating that Camille's name is that of a slave master.

This reckless statement is unacceptable from a person who aspires to lead the multi-ethnic society that is Trinidad and Tobago.

This is the same Kamla who spoke about a “black man,” not “blankman” in the 2020 general election.

How can Kamla’s UNC hope to attract any substantial potential voter when there is this continuous racial undertone on UNC platforms?

No right-thinking Indo- or Afro-Trinbagonian will seriously consider that party as a viable option.

One has to wonder how are Wade Mark, David Nakhid, Jearlean John, and Rodney Charles planning to explain their “slave names.” Or will Wade, Rodney, David, Anita Haynes, Anil Roberts and Jearlean soon be changing their names?

Interestingly, Kamla chose to marry Gregory and named her son Christiano. Why choose these slave names? Will Watson Duke, Gary Griffith, Phillip Alexander and their “slave names” be acceptable for a possible coalition, as were Ashworth Jack, Winston Dookeran, Errol Mc Leod in 2010?

Kamla owes the nation an immediate, urgent and unrepentant apology today.

Every Indian-based organisation should join with other ethnic groups to condemn this offensive comment.

As the UNC internal elections loom large on the horizon, the UNC membership must unyoke themselves from this irresponsible leadership that has burdened the party for far too long.
