A 40-year-old Debe man was gunned down while waiting to meet a customer to sell his car in Arima on Monday night.

Police said Darin "Smalls" Harnarine of Lalbeharry Trace, Debe, went with a friend to the corner of O'Meara Road and the Priority Bus Route, Arima, around 7.30pm to meet a man who was interested in buying his Nissan Tiida.

The friend left to buy a drink at a nearby shop and on returning saw Harnarine bleeding from gunshot wounds. Police on patrol said Harnarine had been shot five times.

He was taken to the Arima Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Investigators said passers-by saw two gunmen running through a nearby parking lot.

Newsday visited Harnarine's home on Tuesday morning but none of his three brothers or three sisters were at home.

Neighbours described him as a friendly person and said he was a PH taxi driver.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said a friend had told them about the murder.

The neighboour told Newsday, "It's very sad, because most of the time he used to be here with us liming. It is a very sad thing."

A close family friend, who also asked not to be named, told Newsday they were sad when they learnt he had been killed.

She added, "He's a good person and was quiet. He doesn't be in anybody way, and he wasn't a sad person. His mother and father passed away when he was young, but all the siblings took care of each other, and they are good people."

Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region II are continuing enquiries.
