A landmark building in La Romaine was destroyed by fire on Thursday night.

Shortly before 8 pm, nearby residents noticed flames coming from the abandoned structure, formerly Venus Cinema, and contacted fire officers and police.

The dilapidated structure, known as the "old cinema," is opposite the La Romaine police post on the Southern Main Road, near La Plaisance Road. It did not have electricity.

Mon Repos fire officers responded and put out the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The cinema had been closed for decades. A few years ago, it was used as a church.

San Fernando police and Mon Repos fire officers are investigating.
