Well done, Rochelle

Rochelle Persad - SUREASH CHOLAI

THE EDITOR: It was really refreshing to read about the culinary accomplishments of 11-year-old Rochelle Persad in the Newsday Kids on Sunday.

They are even more significant because she has Down Syndrome.

Her success comes from the tremendous support of her forward-thinking parents Joan and Harry, her brothers Rennie and Ronel, the Down Syndrome Family Network, the Fishing Pond community in Sangre Grande and worshippers at the New Testament Church of God.

It is stories like this which show how far we have come in acceptance.

It is hoped that her achievements will inspire other parents who are struggling to include their children in the mainstream.

Much still has to be done, however, to educate the population about the challenges they face daily.

Rochelle stands on the shoulders of other giants such as Veera Bhajan and Shamla Maharaj.

Her story comes at a time when the world was horrified (on Saturday) to learn about the massacre of little children in their homes by the Myanmar military.

The juxtaposition cannot be sadder.

For all our problems, TT is still a blessed land.
