Two Trinidadians among six Caribbean Awards for Excellence laureates

The 2021 cohort of laureates for the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence were announced on Thursday, including two from TT.

The announcement was made at the Tatil building in Port of Spain.

Among the six laureates, TT is represented by photographer Maria Nunes, receiving the award for arts and letters, and veterinary scientist Dr Ayanna Carla Phillips Savage, in the category science and technology.

Nunes is a photographer, filmmaker, and producer. She made her name documenting aspects of Caribbean cultural heritage, including traditional Carnival, national festivals, and other performing arts shows.

Savage is a veterinary surgeon, clinician, and university lecturer. Her research has contributed to aquatic animal health in TT and the Caribbean. Her work in marine mammal medicine and aquatic animal health has been key to addressing a critical gap in the field of veterinary medicine in TT and the Caribbean region.

Other awardees include pianist Sean Sutherland from St Vincent and the Grenadines, receiving an award in arts and letters; Dr Guna Muppuri, pharmaceutical entrepreneur from Jamaica, receiving an award in entrepreneurship; Dr Floyd Morris, social activist from Jamaica, recipient in the category public and civic contributions; and Prof Rupika Delgoda, a pharmacologist from Jamaica, for science and technology.

The awards were established in 2005 and has since then named, including the current inductees, 49 laureates from throughout the region.
