A case for PH drivers

THE EDITOR: Earlier in the week as I was watching the evening news, the head of the taxi drivers' association was being interviewed about PH (private hire) taxis and he said that without a doubt, he does not condone PH taxi drivers. The reason for his utterances was the Government was thinking about acting on the situation and making recommendations which made him upset.

PH taxi drivers are not legal but they are a welcome sight when there are groceries and shopping to take home and legal (registere) taxi drivers are not there.

I live on Ariapita Road in St Ann's and PH drivers are a saviour to the community as 95 per cent of legal drivers reach only as far as the St Ann's Psychiatric Hospital and then turn around. What are people living further up, who don't have a private car, supposed to do?

There is no law that can tell them if you want to occupy the St Ann's Taxi Stand you must go up to Ariapita Road because the taxis belong to the drivers. By 4 pm they have vacated the taxi stand and off to their respective communities, which is not St Ann's. So please, if someone can come up with a scenario where everyone can benefit, then this will be most acceptable.
