AS the national discussion on protecting women from assault continues, the Powerful Ladies of TT (PLOTT) is again calling for the adoption of the national strategic plan on gender-based and sexual violence.

In a media release on Saturday, PLOTT called on the Government and Judiciary to address proposed recommendations such as effective policing with an efficient court system; user-friendly support systems for victims; increased support for NGOs to address domestic violence/gender-based violence; introduction of more programmes for perpetrators; consultation on legislation to regulate the use of self-defence weapons and regulations to register and track PH drivers.

“PLOTT supports all reasonable measures to help women safeguard themselves but cautions that these alone will not be sufficient to deal with the systemic issues of violence. While we recognise the gains made with amendments to the Domestic Violence Act and the establishment of a Gender-based Violence Unit in the police service, the continuing scourge of violence against women and children, requires a more aggressive and holistic approach from those in authority.”

PLOTT said they are urging employers and others in the private sector to adopt the Domestic Violence Workplace Policy of the TT Chamber of Commerce as it is every woman’s right to live a life free of fear and violence.

“We must all work to change the narrative about domestic violence.”
