Different strokes for different state employees?

THE EDITOR: This “sou-sou” raid episode is surely revealing some eye-opening facts about how we view different people of different levels of society.

While it still may be in the argumentative phase whether it was a policeman or a soldier who was caught stuffing money in his/her clothing, most of us are confident the officer will eventually face the courts, given the attention this matter is receiving.

But have we for one second compared this incident with other cases of state employees’ alleged dishonesty? And here I am referring to state employees of the highest calibre, for example, ministers of government.

For decades we have heard of acts of dishonesty by former ministers that ran into millions of dollars. And those millions have increased to billions over time.

And while every five years (prior to a general election) we hear more and more accusations by those who want to replace the incumbents, in our more than half a century of independence absolutely no one has been sentenced for these acts – if true.

So the obvious question is: do the chances of you being accused of dishonesty as a state employee and getting away with it depend on what level of employment you’re engaged in?
