PORT of Spain People's Movement (PPM) founder Louis Lee Sing said the results from the local government election show that the PNM can be removed from the Port of Spain City Corporation.

He was speaking to Newsday Tuesday in a telephone interview after the PNM won all 12 seats in the Port of Spain City Corporation in Monday's local government election with preliminary results showing the PPM to have the second highest votes in the district.

"Despite the clean sweep Port of Spain is wide open. (Reportedly) less than 20 per cent (voted in Port of Spain) and the party that came in second in the city is a five-week-old party (showed) the possibilities of moving altogether the incumbent party."

Lee Sing said from his preliminary results the PPM's Woodbrook candidate garnered 353 votes against the little over 400 for the PNM. He also said the last result from St Ann’s River Central showed the PPM candidate was trailing at about 70 votes behind the leading PNM candidate.

"These votes matter not; focus on the percentages. Last time around 22 per cent voted in the city. I am waiting for the final count from the EBC (Elections and Boundaries Commission), I suspect it is less than 22 (this election). With the kind of votes we received the party opened back up voting in Port of Spain. Taking votes from the PNM is the healthiest thing coming out of this election."

Lee Sing said it was abundantly clear that people sitting and waiting patiently for a new political instrument to bring the kind of liberation they seek.

"In the context of Port of Spain had we had the opportunity to be on the ground for a longer period I think the PNM would have been history this morning."

Asked if the party would be contesting any seats in the general election he replied: "When a couple gets married don’t decide to start a family on a honeymoon."
