Government’s Venezuelan Registration Policy is a good plan, not only for security reasons, but to fill the country’s labour gap and benefit from it in terms of taxes.

Jose Cardenas, political analyst and expert in Latin American and Caribbean relations with the United States, said while the move was positive it was also important that TT not seem too inviting for refugees.

He also warned that criminal elements often took advantage of desperate people. In this case it would include an increase in human trafficking, and possibly inviting Venezuelans to join criminal organisations in exchange for meeting their basic needs.

All this, he said, would put a strain on law enforcement.
