ANIL MAHABIR, 22, told a magistrate on Monday he is a diesel and rig mechanic, but cannot find work.
He stole a gold chain and a gold bracelet from Toolija Dhanraj Bhola at her apartment in Palmyra Village, near San Fernando, on Thursday last week. They were worth $7,000.
After pleading guilty, Mahabir told senior magistrate Jo-Anne Connor he used the money to buy food.

Mahabir, who lived in the same house as Bhola, told the San Fernando magistrates’ court he saw the jewellery in Bhola's bag and took it.
Police prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said police confronted Mahabir  at Ste Madeleine Police station and he confessed, “I really stole the gold chain and bera (bracelet) because I not working.”

The items were recovered.
Mahabir told Connor he is owed people money he borrowed, but even as a diesel and rig mechanic, employment was difficult to find.
Connor asked him, “So as a mechanic, you can’t find work? You can’t do something else? CEPEP? Wash cars?”

He said no.
Connor fined him $3,500 and ordered him to pay $1,500 forthwith or serve 28 days in jail with hard labour.
