As Tobago is being marketed across the Americans and Europe, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) continues to make various attempts to have the island seen as a destination for event tourism as well.

On Monday, they joined forces with Chairman and Founder of Mr Caribbean, Marie Antoinette Mora, as she brings the pageant from Dominica to Tobago. The pageant which has representatives from nine Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago was launched on Monday at the Mount Irvine Bay Resort.

“The Mr Caribbean competition was created against the backdrop of the disappearing male in Caribbean society, as it relates to avenues that showcase the tremendous amount of talent that abounds in young men in comparison to the plethora of opportunities that exists for their female counterparts. The male figure was absent, yet it is this same male figure that is too often consumed by drugs, crime and violence in the region and so I founded Mr Dominica first in 2012 and Mr Caribbean followed in 2014.

“This competition is one intervention that gives young men another purpose and platform for highlighting their many positive attributes and talents,” Mora said.

In outlining the different segments of the show, which is carded for June 1 at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex, the competition’s Chairman and Founder said that the show is opened to male between the ages of 18 and 45, giving them an opportunity to express their natural charm and moreover their abundant talent. The contestants, she said would compete in magnificent wear, costume, talent, swimwear, formal wear and interview segments.

Director of Culture at the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Division of Tourism, Culture and Transportation, Glenda-Rose Layne was on hand to endorse the Division’s support for the competition.

While, Tobago’s representative in the competition, 40-year-old Andel McIntosh stated that the competition not only puts Tobago on the map but allows him to represent the island as an ambassador and role model to young men in society.

Other contestants scheduled to appear are Timoy Titus of Antigua and Barbuda, Kefa Wesley Smith of Guyana, Kofi Gilkes of Barbados, Deshawn Augustin of St Lucia, Yohance Smith of the British Virgin Islands, Marvin Halden of Suriname, Johnathan Samuel of Trinidad and Jorvan Kerwin JnoBaptiste of Dominica.
