Perfect Fire end PYC win streak

FIRE became the last remaining unbeaten team in the Courts All Sectors Netball League Premiership Division after beating title-rivals Police Youth Club (PYC) 36-30 at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua, Saturday.

Ronald Phipps, Fire’s and the league’s leading scorer, led the charge yet again, scoring 26 goals in his 38 attempts, follwed by Simone Morgan who supported with 10/16.

The result saw Fire to a perfect 10 points after five matches, while PYC, having entered the fixture on a four-match win streak, remained on eight points.

Police, meanwhile, overturned a four-goal half time deficit to sneak past a win-less Las Lomas Academy 42-40 for their first victory this season.

Steve McSween enjoyed one of the best performances in any of the four divisions thus far, connecting 35 goals from 47 attempts for Police, followed by his team-mate Jesselle Navarro, who scored seven crucial goals from nine tries.

Defence Force was the other victorious Premiership Division team on the day.

Led by Kerry McMillan (29/44), Defence Force secured their third Premiership win in five outings, beating UTC 37-33.

Meanwhile, there were two Championship Division matches, including a clash between leaders Bermudez and Miscellaneous, a match which produced the day’s best individual performance from goal-shoot Makeda de Freitas.

De Freitas, who has been instrumental in Bermudez’s dominant run in the division, netted an incredible 40 goals from 47 attempts, her highest points total and one of the highest in all four divisions. Her team-mate Indra Anderson followed up with 10/13.

Bermudez moved to 10 points from their five straight wins.

Jabloteh sneaked past Defence Force 25-22 in the day’s opening Championship Division match.
