7 charged with obstructing police

SEVEN St Augustine residents have appeared before a Tunapuna magistrate, charged with various offences allegedly arising out of an incident with police.

In a statement, the police said on January 25, three officers assigned to the St Joseph CID were in the St Augustine district, responding to a robbery report, when they arrested two men at Mohammed Street.

The statement said as the officers were trying to leave the area, they were confronted by several people who blocked their vehicle.

The police called for assistance and tried to clear the debris off the road but were accosted by residents, and one officer was injured.

When the situation was eventually quelled, five more people were arrested.

Those appearing before the court were Shervonne Assing, 19, of Mohammed Trace, St Augustine, and a minor, who were charged with robbery with violence. They appeared in the Tunapuna magistrates’ court on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Afiesha Timothy, 34, Keisha Timothy, 18, Aquimer Dowers, 31, and Matthew Alexander, 23, all of Mohammed Street, appeared on charges of assaulting a police officer,

Afiesha Timothy, Keisha Timothy and Alexander faced additional charges of malicious damage of the police officer’s clothing, while the two women were charged with using obscene language, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.

Afiesha Timothy was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a police officer, resulting in his sustaining a broken bone in his left hand.

A seventh accused, Cheron Alexander, 51, was charged with using obscene language, resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties.

Afiesha, Keisha, Matthew, Cheron and Dowers pleaded not guilty when they appeared before magistrate Adrian Darmanie. They will return to court on February 27.
