Kamla to debate PM’s address in Parliament

Not having received a public acknowledgement from the Prime Minister to her challenge to a national debate, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is now challenging him to debate his national address in the Parliament.

Dr Rowley, in a two-part pre-recorded national address titled Mind Your Business, discussed the state of TT’s economy and promised to work to lift the country out of debt that he likened to a hole and blamed on the former government’s spending, citing specifically a $29 billion figure.

However, at a media conference at the UNC Couva South constituency auditorium on Monday, Persad-Bissessar challenged him to engage in a public debate, saying his televised address on Sunday was “political comedy central.”

Rowley did not respond.

This has not stopped Persad-Bissessar. In a media statement yesterday, she once again challenged him to a debate.

“The Prime Minister has told citizens to Mind Your Business, but I remind him that he was elected to serve the people, and he must do so in the nation’s Parliament. Is Dr Rowley afraid to report to Parliament?

“I have challenged the Prime Minister to debate this critical issue and I draw him out now: let’s debate his address to the nation in the Parliament. I have filed in Parliament notice of a motion to debate the details of his address.

“The ball is in your court, Prime Minister,” she declared. “Do the right thing and account to the citizens of this country over your Government’s incompetence and inability to manage the nation’s affairs
