Worrell was best

THE EDITOR: Recently Clive Lloyd was selected as the best ever international cricket captain. I humbly beg to disagree. My choice is Frank Worrell.

Let us look at real cricket. Test match cricket. Not fete match cricket. Hitting against the line, scantily dressed women winning in a lewd and suggestive manner. The only real winners being the alcohol companies.

Viv Richards won 27 from 50 tests. His percentage is 54. Clive Lloyd won 36 from 74. His percentage is 49. Frank Worrell won nine from 15. His percentage is 60. Richie Richardson won 11 from 24. His percentage is 46.

Figures do not lie.

Worrell had players like RB Kanhai,LR Gibbs, AL Valentine, GEGomez, S Ramadhin and GS Sobers to choose from. Llyod had at his disposal the likes of A Roberts, M Holding, C Croft, J Garner, G Greenidge, D Haynes, V Richards, L Rowe, A Kallicharan, L Gomes and R Richardson. Quite a formidable team I am sure you would agree.

What I would say is Lloyd was a good captain with a great team. On the other hand Worrell was a great captain with a good team. Gary Sobers is the greatest Test all rounder: 93 Test matches, 8032 runs, 235 wickets, 109 catches. No argument here.
