US not above law

THE EDITOR: Some of us remember the key pioneering role played by one of our former prime ministers ANR Robinson in establishing the International Criminal Court, a long time ago.

Indeed, the court has functioned well in prosecuting many international warlords, human traffickers and other worldwide offenders who live in countries with severely compromised legal systems.

So, it was with a severe degree of sadness that I listened to America's top security diplomat John Bolton outline the hostile approach America is taking, under the Trump administration, to punish and sanction anyone or any country who has anything to do with the International Criminal Court.

This is just horrible that the leading country in the free world would take such a negative position against one of the few worldwide institutions, with the ability to work for the common good of all mankind.

For the past 50 years, so many of us looked up to the USA for guidance and good leadership in an often-turbulent world. Now, we have a United States of America that is aggressively working towards becoming the leading proponent of conflict and instability worldwide. This is such a sad state of affairs.
