Whether rich or poor, treat all clients fairly

A SENIOR attorney is urging others to uphold their profession by treating each client fairly and not based on their status, how much money they earn or position.

This was the call from Ernest H. Koylass, SC, who said there are situations where attorneys show more interest in cases where the client is wealthy. He spoke at the annual luncheon by the Assembly of Southern Lawyers at the Dim Sum Restaurant in San Fernando.

Koylass told attorneys to stay true to their oath of office . He said being an attorney involves sacrifice since as individuals they are duty bound to do their best for each client. He said this advice is not only for attorneys but also judges. “Any matter that you have and represent a client carries the same law. It is up to you to act in the best interest of your client. That is the essence of being an attorney. You must be willing help even the smallest man.”

Koylass said some attorneys abuse their power and give preferential treatment to cases that involve a wealthy client. He told attorneys they should ask themselves daily, what can I do today for someone else? This, he said, is one of the most important questions in life.

“Serve, but be happy to be of service.” Koylass later congratulated newly appointed senior counsel Khemraj Harrikissoon, saying to receive this honour attorneys must show attributes of loyalty, integrity and ability.

“Law is not only about representing clients, but serving the interests of Trinidad and Tobago.” Addressing members later were president of the Assembly of Southern of Lawyers Ramesh Deena and president of the Law Association, Douglas Mendes, SC.

In attendance apart from members of the Assembly were Justices Maria Wilson, Carla Brown-Antoine, Kevin Ramcharan and others.
