MINISTER of Public Utilities Robert Le Hunte said on Monday that the 2,000 excess workers at WASA can be used in a number of areas of the organisation which are in need of improvement.

“There are areas in customer service, a number of work areas, where we contract out services, there are a number of leaks to fix and therefore before we look at really reducing those numbers, we are trying to put these workers to work so that we can get productivity out of them.

“It does not make sense contracting out services when you have workers. My focus at WASA is to try as much as possible to utilise the workers to correct some of the ills that we all experience. We all know there are a lot of leaks in TT.” He was speaking at a Leadership Breakfast Assembly hosted by the National Association of Administrative Professionals, Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s.

Le Hunte said sometimes he is embarrassed when he passes by a WASA installation and sees overgrown grass, because WASA has to hire contractors to cut the grass, while it has workers who could do it. He said it does not make sense contracting more workers to do the job when there are adequate staff at WASA. “My focus is to try to increase the productivity at WASA and try to get more out of the workforce that we have. I have also recognised that the workers are the ones who know how we could improve efficiency in the organisation.”
