UPDATE:

FIRE damaged a computer room at the TT Regiment’s La Romaine base on Monday evening.

According to reports, officers on duty at the base reported seeing smoke coming from the building housing computers and communication equipment around 6.30pm. When they checked, they saw several pieces of equipment on fire.

Fire officers from the Mon Repos Fire Station were called and were able to contain the blaze. No one was hurt in the incident.

Newsday visited the base yesterday and was told that no one was authorised to speak to the media. Fire officers could be seen on the compound speaking to soldiers and examining the exterior of the building.

Efforts to reach the Regiment’s public relations department at its Chaguaramas base were unsuccessful and Newsday was told the telephone lines were not working properly.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
