THE youngsters seemed to have had musical fun yesterday, much to the amusement of Adjudicator Dorothy Howden. “Thank you all for the fun,” she declared. The performances were indeed amusing, Howden added.

The fanciest among the classes was the Primary School Instrumental Ensemble. The school, Dunross, exhibited a virtual class of very small bells, each with a different tone, but the combination of small table bells truly made a big difference. The school band topped the class with 89 marks. The different animals included a horse, a cat, but there was no noises like what you would get from a cat, or a horse.

Yesterday’s session opened with competition in Class A3 -- Boys Vocal Solo -- 13 - 15 yrs. Their Test Piece was “The Silver Fleet” arranged by Gerald Cockshot. In this class one very energetic youngster, who can sing and act at the same time, won the class handsomely, as well as the rousing applause from sparse audience.

In Class A4 - Boys Vocal Solo, 16 - 19 yrs. were faced with a test piece composed by Charles Glover, titled “The Rose of Tralee. by Brendon John. With his commanding voice, he polled 90 marks to take first place. Josiah de Leon came second with 89 marks.

Class B-8 -- Girls Vocal Trio -- 19 yrs. and under. Test piece: ”I bought me a cat“ by Aaron Copland. This class was won by A.P.A Girls’ who got 90 marks.

On Thursday, Dunross Boys’ Choir won Class C2 - Primary/Secondary Choirs -- Boys Treble Voices. They got 87 marks. Class C6 for Secondary School Choirs -- Lower voices -- 19 yrs. and under, was won by Fatima College Senior Choir with 87 marks. They go on to the Finals. BAHS Senior Choir won Class C4 with 92 marks, while in the Steelpan Solo, 12 yrs. and under, was won by Azara Mohammed. He gained 92 marks in the final. Fatima College College Senior choir, won Class C6 by getting 90 marks. Bishop’s Senior Choir got 92 marks to win the Test Piece -- “Climb Every Mountain, taken from Rogers & Hammerstein film. The Steelpan Solo for competitors 16 - 19 yrs. was won by Joshua Peters, who won the final with 93 marks for the tune ”Time for pan.“

The Festival continues today.
