Police to investigate police harassment claim

JENSEN LA VENDE

Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams yesterday ordered the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) to investigate claims of sexual harassment against female officers in the Central Division.

Police sources said the unit, which was mandated to weed out rogue police officers, was given instructions yesterday morning after a report was submitted to Williams. They could not say if Williams ordered the report before the PSB got involved.

Female constables assigned to the Central Division had complained that they were constantly being sexually harassed by a superior male officer and were tired of the nonchalant way in which their seniors dealt with reports about it.

Some of the officers told Newsday when they complained either they were transferred or no action wass taken. They said the male culprit has a habit of rubbing his crotch against them while telling them very unprofessional and inappropriate things. They said it has become so unbearable that no female officer wants to work with him.
