LAVENTILLE West MP Fitzgerald Hinds said the Laventille Community Swimming Pool Facility is a gift to the people of Laventille, as it gives residents “deeper, wider and more varied opportunities.”

The pool, scheduled to open in August, is expected to give youngsters in the area opportunities in aquatic sports such as swimming, diving and water polo.

The facility may also help members of the community gain employment through coaching and maintenance.

Yesterday at the official sod-turning ceremony, Hinds said, “This project, as many of you must by now recognise, is a well-deserved gift to the people of Laventille.

It has been long and eagerly awaited, especially by those who have indicated their intention to use it on a regular basis.”

Hinds said the opening of the pool will provide residents with new opportunities.

“I am certain that every one of you present today (yesterday), and listening across the radio airwaves, would agree that there is a profound need for more varied, deeper and wider opportunities for the people of Laventille and the people of TT generally.

I am very confident that this project would advance that vision and that purpose significantly,” Hinds said. He said the facility is of a high standard and encouraged Laventille to make use of it.

“This facility...is built to international standards, the architects have told me, and we appreciate that.

It means that when one of you of Laventille fly across that pool in record time because of its build, because of its depth, because it meets international standards, that record will compete internationally with the best anywhere.

“So swim like you’re crazy, Laventille, swim right here.

So make use of it, as the Minister of Sport (Darryl Smith) told you, protect it, cherish it with your lives, value it.”
