UPDATED:

Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine yesterday denied bail to a Claxton Bay father charged with beating his 30-year-old pregnant wife who is a Russian whom he met online a few years ago.

David McMillan, 50, of Crescent Drive, Union Village, appeared in the San Fernando First Court and pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting Tatiana Rukavtshnikova. PC Nagessar of St Margaret’s Police Station laid the charge. The charge against McMillan was that on Tuesday he cuffed and beat Rukavtshnikova, who is 32 weeks pregnant and the mother of his two-year son.

She accused McMillan of not allowing her to speak to anyone and told the magistrate he had taken her passport and cell phone. McMillan represented himself and acknowledged he is “legally married” to Rukavtshnikova. When the magistrate enquired about his occupation, he responded: “Let’s say it is real estate.” Court prosecutor PC Cleyon Seedan objected to bail being granted to McMillan, saying the situation is volatile. Seedan said that based on information he received, it appears the virtual complainant (Rukavtshnikova) is living in a prison. The magistrate remanded McMillan into custody and adjourned the case to Monday for the court to get his criminal record tracing.
