Senior cop McIntyre quits

Months before he was due to proceed on pre-retirement leave, Head of Central Division Ag Snr Supt Kenny Mc Intyre has proceeded on vacation leave and has no plan to return to active duty. Mc Intyre was due to proceed on pre-retirement leave from September 7. Sources revealed that Mc Intyre’s decision to quit was as a result of a disagreement he had with an executive member of the Police Service.

Mc Intyre was reluctant to give any details of the disagreement but sources in the know said the issue involves a businessman from Chaguanas who was ordered by the courts, to report to the Chaguanas Police Station weekly on specific days to sign an attendance book. That action required the businessman to present himself at the station with a book and an officer to sign that book as proof that he (the businessman) had visited the station. However, the businessman began sending someone else with the book which was already signed, to the police station to collect the officer on duty’s signature. The source added that the book was signed even when the businessman was out of the country, in contravention of the court’s order that he visit the police station.

Reports are that when this state of affairs was brought to Mc Intyre’s attention, he ordered an immediate stop to it, by way of direct instructions that no police officer under any circumstance, is to sign any book sent to the police station in the absence of the person so ordered by the courts. The businessman later complained to a member of the Police Executive who is his (the businessman) friend.

This senior officer in turn, summoned McIntyre to a meeting at Police Administration Building in Port of Spain. Sources revealed that Mc Intyre was instructed to allow the businessman to continue to send the book to the station, but McIntyre refused. As a result, the Central Division head decided to leave the police service. He gave notice that his last day in office was yesterday.

Contacted for comment, Mc Intyre confirmed that he will not be returning to the Police Service and that his vacation leave began yesterday. He said he did not wish to comment further. Yesterday, former Head of the South Western Division Inraj Balram was posted as new head of Central Division.
