NSA: PM’s address, much ado about nothing

National Solidarity Assembly (NSA) leader Nirvan Maharaj has described Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s address to the nation on Sunday as much ado about nothing and called on him to resign.

Maharaj who also heads the All Trinidad General Workers Trade Union (ATGWTU) said the address has signalled the PM’s inability to provide solutions to the nation’s woes.

He said he seems to have given up on providing hope or even a semblance of strong but compassionate leadership.

All the general statements about sustainable development, economic policies and fiscal management means nothing to a people struggling with bread and butter issues, while facing criminals intent on destroying lives and wreaking havoc.” Maharaj said the address lacked substance in addressing the horrific crime situation and the wanton killing of citizens without remorse.

“The Prime Minister was unable to give any solutions towards restoring the social contract between the State and its citizens, to allow our people to live a life free from fear, insecurity and anxiety and to enjoy their constitutional right to peace, security and enjoyment of property.

Stating that the people understand the economic situation and are willing to make the necessary sacrifices in so far as hard work and adjustments are concerned, citizens cannot do so while fearful for their lives. “Something needs to give and if the prime minister is unable to provide specific answers and not mere generic statements, then the people must have their say.”
