Maracas car park upgrade completed

The Maracas Beach car park has been completed.

In a release yesterday the Tourism Ministry reported that a brief handover ceremony was held yesterday, hosted by the Ministry of Works and Transport. It featured ribbon-cutting by Tourism Minster Shamfa Cudjoe, Culture Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly and Works Minister Rohan Sinanan.

Also present were Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis and Energy Minister Franklin Khan, who in his previous capacity as Minister of Rural Development and Local Government formulated the strategy for the re-start of the Maracas Beach Facility Improvement Project.

The release said the upgrade of the car park and associated drainage and road works represented Package 1 of the project.

“Visitors to Maracas Beach can now expect an easier flow of traffic and increased car park spaces, which include accommodation for the differently -abled, tour buses and maxi taxis.”

The release said the opening of the car park signalled the commitment of the Tourism Ministry in collaboration with the Works Ministry to enhance the visitor experience at Maracas Beach.

“In the coming months, visitors may also look forward to new and refurbished vending booths and washroom facilities. Whether you arrive by sea, air or you stay to get to away, the ministry intends to utilise this site as a unique selling point in its international marketing and promotional campaign.”

The ministry said, for this month, the newly opened car park would be free of charge. Construction work to complete the project and improve the site continues.

In a media release yesterday, Coosal’s reported that, following a successful tender package bid, the company was awarded the contract for Package 1 and started work in May. The project was handed over to the client, Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency Unit (PURE), this month as anticipated.

The works included, among other things, clearing and grubbing, relocation and use of client-issued stockpiles, demolishing existing structures, excavation and fill, constructing access approaches, road widening, a roundabout, car parking, drainage, pedestrian walkways and ancillary works such as handrails, lighting, signage road and car-park markings.
