Dave Cowie dies

United National Congress (UNC) former chairman and former deputy leader Dave Cowie is dead, with reports suggesting he died of a heart attack on Tuesday. Cowie also served on several occasions as a temporary opposition senator and government senator from 1991 to 2001.

He is thought to have been 64.

Several UNC colleagues paid tribute yesterday.

UNC deputy leader David Lee, who worked at the Central Bank with Cowie, an attorney, in the 1980s, hailed him as a “very nice colleague, always willing to assist us.”

Lee told Newsday Cowie had also been very active as legal counsel to the sugar workers' union, then led by Couva South MP Rudy Indarsingh.
