Felicity residents want cremation site moved

Felicity residents who have been clamouring for years for the relocation of their cremation site may get their wish as consultations with the Ministry of Local Government and other stakeholders are set for mid-December.

After the consultations a proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Local Government to be included in the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) for the next fiscal year, 2018/2019.

On Tuesday, Minister of Local Government Kazim Hosein along with MP for Chaguanas West Ganga Singh, Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan and others toured the cremation site situated next to two marinas and a leisure boat service.

During the tour, MP Singh referred to this juxtaposition of, “the sacred and the profane”, as undesirable for residents who use the cremation facility, warranting its need to be relocated. After the visiting the site, the group viewed a potential relocation site at the Caparo River.

“We thank the Member of Parliament Ganga Singh, for bringing this issue to the attention of the ministry.

We are committed to working with the Chaguanas Borough Corporation to resolve this issue and we are looking at the feasibility of relocating the site to somewhere more fitting for the people who require this facility,” Minister Hosein said.

“We are committed to working with all stakeholders especially those in the Hindu community, as religious bodies are key pillars in our society. Consultation with the public will be held to find the best way to establish a facility that will be respectful to all,” the minister promised.
