Volunteers needed to help flood victims

The National Volunteer Network is calling for volunteers from the 14 municipal corporations to lend a helping hand as assessment to the damage caused by heavy rainfall over the past few days in flood-prone areas is done.

The call is being made by Matthew Kailah, coordinator of the network which falls under the aegis of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government. Citizens interested in volunteering their services can contact the coordinator at 314-6481 or feel free to contact the respective municipal corporations.

Kailah is supported by Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Kazim Hosein who is urging “all volunteer groups and citizens to be their brothers’ keepers and assist in any way that they can, in the spirit of volunteerism.”

In a release, Hosein said the disaster management hotlines in the 14 municipal corporations have been activated and citizens are advised to make full use of the service in areas where there is severe flooding.

“We at the ministry will continue to work arduously with all local government practitioners and volunteers to ensure that help reaches to every citizen in need at this time,” he said.
